IMPAC5: The 5th International Marine Protected Areas Congress
From 1 to 8 September 2022, the world’s leading ocean conservation professionals will meet in Vancouver, Canada to chart a course towards protecting 30% of the global ocean by 2030.
We can ensure future success in protecting the ocean by sharing our past accomplishments. We invite you—as individuals and organizations from around the world—to recount your ocean conservation journeys and lessons learned for future action in ocean protection.
Congress Details
IMPAC5 will be jointly hosted by the Host First Nations—xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)—together with the Province of British Columbia, the Government of Canada, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Call for Proposals
Please share the work that your country is doing on MPAs and ocean conservation at IMPAC5!
The IMPAC5 call for proposals launched on 14 June 2021 and will be open until 20 October 2021. IMPAC5 is a chance to celebrate and galvanize global cooperation in marine conservation. The Congress will be a hybrid event with both in-person and virtual programming that will inspire attendees through creative and engaging sessions.
The IMPAC5 Secretariat is looking for proposals for symposiums, posters/e-posters, speed talks and other program elements.
Themes and Streams
To guide discussions and further dialogue at IMPAC5, all aspects of this ground breaking Congress will be informed by five themes:
- Building a global marine protected area network
- Advancing conservation in the blue economy
- Actively managing marine protected areas and human activity
- Conserving biodiversity and addressing the climate crisis
- Connecting ocean, culture and human well-being
As well, the thematic framework for IMPAC5 activities will be informed by three cross-cutting themes:
- Innovation and Transformational Change
- Indigenous Peoples Leadership
- The Voice of Young Professionals
Delivering results to world leaders
IMPAC5 will end with an exciting one-day Leadership Summit on 8 September, where leaders from participating governments and organizations will hear will hear the results of the Congress, address key issues, affirm commitments to expanding ocean protection, and chart the course to protecting 30% by 2030.
