Throughout 2023, there have been many key moments for the ocean, including adopting a historic High Seas Treaty, no deep-sea mining approved by the International Seabed Authority, and increased marine protected area coverage globally, to name a few.
However, more work is needed in 2024 to ensure decision-makers and the public #ListenToTheOcean.
The line-up of ocean events in 2024 are key as they will be setting the stage (and priorities!) for events in 2025 – which has the 3rd United Nations World Ocean Conference, UNFCCC COP30 where countries will set their new National Determined Contributions to keep the planet under 1.5 degrees of warming, and the 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority where States will attempt to conclude a deep-sea ‘Mining Code’ and potentially the beginning of the new destructive industry – creating what appears to be another ‘super year for the ocean’. As an ocean community, we must use 2024 to build strong foundations moving in 2025.
