Monthly Ocean Science Roundup – August 2024

Date: 3rd September 2024

This issue explores:

  • Corals that survive repeated thermal stress show signs of selection and acclimatisation
  • The ocean losing its breath under the heatwaves
  • Directional swimming patterns in jellyfish aggregations

Welcome to the August 2024 issue of the OneOcean Science Mailout.

In this edition we present three new papers. These focus on:

  • How some species of coral may be able to acclimatize to heat stress in an increasingly warmer ocean
  • The impact of marine heatwaves on low-oxygen extreme events in the ocean’s surface layer is greater than previously thought and could be leading to more severe impacts on marine biodiversity and ecosystems
  • Insights into the swimming behaviour of jellyfish. A Mediterranean species is able to swim away from the coast, reducing the risk of strandings.
