Monthly Ocean Science Roundup – November 2024

Date: 9th December 2024

This issue explores:

  • Migrating is not enough for modern planktonic foraminifera in a changing ocean
  • Half of Atlantic reef-building corals at elevated risk of extinction due to climate change and other threats
  • Ocean literacy research community: co-identifying gaps and priorities to advance the UN Ocean Decade

Welcome to the November 2024 issue of the OneOcean Science Mailout.

Following the UNFCCC COP29 in Baku, this month’s newsletter brings you three studies that collectively emphasize the critical need for international collaboration and robust climate action to protect marine ecosystems:

  • Planktonic foraminifera, essential indicators of ocean health, are exhibiting poleward and vertical migrations in response to warming and acidification, highlighting the vulnerability of these key marine organisms to climate change;
  • Nearly half of Atlantic reef-building corals are now at risk of extinction, a stark reminder of the mounting pressures on these critical, habitat-forming species from climate change and local stressors; and,
  • Ocean literacy as a transformative tool for empowering communities and shaping policies aligned with the UN Ocean Decade goals, with equity and inclusivity at its core.
