Monthly Ocean Science Roundup – July 2020

Date: 3rd August 2020

This issue explores:

  • The role of ecosystems in mitigation and management of COVID-19 and other zoonoses
  • Midwater ecosystems must be considered when evaluating environmental risks of deep-sea mining
  • End overfishing and increase the resilience of the ocean to climate

Welcome to the July 2020 issue of the OneOcean Science Mailout. We hope everyone is staying safe during these difficult times. Despite many of us being in some form of lockdown due to COVID-19, communicating the importance of Blue Nature and the ocean continues to be desirable and effective.

This week we’re bringing you three recent publications around the role of ecosystems in mitigation and management of COVID-19 and other zoonoses, the effects of deep-sea mining on midwater ecosystems, and overfishing and the ocean’s resilience to climate change.

Last week the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition launched Game Over, a brand new game that highlights the threat of deep-sea mining, by pitting you, a very cute Dumbo Octopus, against an onslaught of deep-sea mining gear.

The game gives players the opportunity to take action in defence of the deep by emailing their Prime Minister or President and calling for their support for a global moratorium on deep-sea mining.

Show your support for the deep sea today by playing the game and adding your voice to growing calls for a global moratorium.

Find out more about why the Coalition are calling for a global moratorium on deep-sea mining, here.
