There have been many key ocean moments in 2022, including progress on anti-DSM efforts, a ground-breaking CITES vote for shark protection, the first formal step towards a Global Plastics Treaty, and a WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies, to name a few.
We leave 2022 without a High Seas Treaty, and with the 30×30 target for the ocean at risk. Next year brings the opportunity to secure more, including a robust High Seas Treaty, progress on creating MPAs, and the start of a ratification campaign to halt the threat of deep-sea mining and further gains for species protection. There are fewer high profile moments for the ocean in 2023 and we will have to communicate and campaign harder to maintain the ocean’s profile. However, we are building on firmer foundations than has previously been the case.
