Welcome to the June 2023 issue of the OneOcean Science Mailout.
As the 28th session of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Council and Assembly resumes this week, over 5,000 new species have been discovered on the seabed of the Pacific Ocean, within an area that is the target for deep-sea mining.
In this edition we’re bringing you three new papers – these are focused on:
- Metazoan species in the Clarion Clipperton Zone, the world’s largest mineral exploitation region.
- The transfer by ocean currents of cooler, plankton-rich waters to the surface has been found to reduce heat stress and limit coral bleaching in the Central Pacific.
- The freshening of Antarctic waters and the impact on deep ocean circulation.
